Radegonde and the First Crusade
In the dead of winter in 1096, a young seamstress from northern France embarks on a most improbable journey: a trek across Europe to the Holy Land to liberate Jerusalem. Swept up into the First Crusade, Radegonde and her companions—a formerly enslaved African, a Jewish scholar, a runaway monk, and a Muslim girl—encounter the violence and cruelty of war, but also love, forgiveness, and hope. Radegonde and the First Crusade gives voice to women whose stories are so often overlooked in accounts of the past, and brings to life a pivotal moment in history when ordinary people, by transforming themselves, transformed the world.
Like Lauren’s other titles of historical fiction, Radegonde is deeply researched and inspired by the events of the time period.
With a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, Lauren Small is an adjunct assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she teaches narrative medicine to pediatric residents. She has a passion for social justice and for the history of medicine. Her novel The Hanging of Ruben Ashford, set in Baltimore, Maryland, is also available from Brickhouse Books.
Praise for Radegonde:
“Radegonde and the First Crusade personalizes the drama of the Crusades in a way no history book could convey. Superbly researched and beautifully written, Lauren Small weaves together a tale of romance, adventure and tragedy in an unforgettable story that gives hope to those who dare risk all for a better life.” — Steven R. David, Professor of Political Science, Johns Hopkins University
“Lauren Small’s gripping tale takes the reader directly into the heart of the Medieval Jewish world. Radegonde and the First Crusade thoughtfully centers women’s experiences during this pivotal time in history. This bookis essential reading for all who want to see the Crusades in a new light and understand their lasting impact.” — Rachel Gildiner, Executive Director SRE Network
